Margulan Institute of Archeology is a state institution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which is the coordinating center for archaeological research in the country.
Outstanding orientalists and historians VV Bartold, VV Radlov, PI Lerkh, as well as representatives of the advanced Russian intelligentsia, stand at the origins of the development of archeology in Kazakhstan. Soviet archaeologists M.E. Masson, S.P. Tolstov, A.N.Bernshtam, M.P. Gryaznov, S.S.Chernikov, P.I. Boriskovsky, A.P. Okladnikov , L.R. Kyzlasova, V.M. Masson play the key role in the foundation of archaeology in the republic.
As an independent scientific direction of social science in Kazakhstan, archeology was formed in the system of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, created in 1946. In 1946 the Department of Archeology as a part of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography named after Valikhanova Ch. founded its own school, scientific base, trained specialists, received materials that allow to pose and solve fundamental questions of the ancient and medieval history of Kazakhstan.
The period, which covers the pre-war period and ends at the end of the 1960s, was characterized by the organization of large expeditions, works in the virgin lands, burial grounds of the Bronze Age in Central Kazakhstan, the Saki burial ground Besshatyr in Zhetysu. The research works at this time were done by Margulan A. Kh., Maksimova A. G., Ageeva E. I., Patsevich G. I., Senigova T. N., Akishev K. A., Kadyrbaev M. K., Alpysbaev Kh., Kushaev G. A., Arslanov F. Kh., Sadomskov V. I., Orazbaev A. M..
In the second half of the 1960s - 1980s, a new generation of archaeologists emerged: Nurmukhanbetov B.N., Erzakovich L. B., Baipakov K. M., Akhinzhanov S. M., Mershchiev M. S., Zholdasbaev S. Zh., Groshev V.A., Taimagambetov Zh.K., Kurmankulov Zh.K., Akishev A.K., Samashev Z.S., Smagulov E.A., Savelyeva T.V., Ermolayeva A.S., Motov Yu.A., Makarova A. A., Nurumov T. N.; numismatists: R.Z.Burnasheva, V.N.Nastich.
By the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kazakh SSR No. 496 of August 28, 1991 and the Resolution of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR No. 73 of September 6, 1991, the Institute of Archeology was established, which was named after the outstanding scientist, archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, orientalist, philologist, academician Margulan A. Kh.
The creation of an independent Institute in 1991 was prepared by the entire course of development of archaeological and historical science in Kazakhstan, which is associated with the study of origins of the evolution of human, his distant past, cultural heritage as part of world civilization. The Institute is the coordinating center for archaeological research in the country.
Over the years of its activity, the Institute of Archeology named after Margulan A.Kh. achieved not only significant results, developed and successfully implemented new directions, but also formed a conceptual basis for further archaeological research in Kazakhstan. The organizational support of scientific research is regulated by the Academic Council. There is a Council of Young Scientists.
