The Institute of Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan is one of the oldest research centers in the republic. It was created by the initiative of a prominent public and political figure, writer, playwright Abdurauf Fitrat in 1928 in Samarkand and originally functioned as the State Institute of Music and Choreography, abbreviated as Inmuzkhoruz (another name is the Scientific Research Institute for the Study of Uzbek Folk and Classical Music).

Until the beginning of 1932, the Institute was located in the former capital of the republic, Samarkand, combining research activities with the training of national musicologists and composers. One of the first musicologists of Uzbekistan, Nikolai Nazarovich Mironov, became the director of the Inmuzkhoruz, and such outstanding representatives of traditional Uzbek art as Ota Jalol Nosirov, Domla Halim Ibadov, Matyusuf Kharratov, Khozhi Abdulaziz Rasulov, Khozhi Abdurahmon Umarov, Akhmadzhon Umurkirimov, Akhmadzhon Umurkirimov and etc.

For a short Samarkand period (1928-1932), the Institute managed to prepare 2 graduate students, many of whom later became famous figures of the national musical art. Among them are the author of the National Anthem of Uzbekistan Mutal (Mutavakkil) Burkhanov, creators of the first Uzbek operas Mukhtar Ashrafi and Tolib Sadykov, composers Doni Zakirov, Sharif Ramazanov, Anvar Halimov, a prominent connoisseur of maqom art Shonazar Sakhibov (Tajikistan).

After the transfer to Tashkent (1932) and a number of reorganizations, the Institute finally took shape as a research institution, working in this capacity to this day. In accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan No. 141 dated 19.05.2009, the Institute of Art History is included in the system of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

For 90 years of its existence, the Institute has been the only one in the republic and one of the largest art history centers in the region. Its priority in this scientific field is confirmed by a number of historical and archaeological discoveries of world significance, significant results of many years of research in the field of ethnomusicology and traditional artistic crafts, spectacular arts and national architecture. The leading role of the Institute is in the study of fine arts, composer creativity, pop art, modern theater, choreography and cinema of Uzbekistan.
